How to Clean Golf Sunglasses: Check the Lens Care Instructions

If you want to know how to clean golf sunglasses, begin with the care instructions for the lenses you actually own. The cleaning fluid, cloth and handling method should suit those lenses and their coatings.

Fingerprints, dust and sunscreen marks can tempt you to use whatever is in your golf bag. A better approach is to keep the approved care method and the right supplies together, so you can deal with ordinary dirt without improvising.

This is research-based equipment-care and buying guidance, not our hands-on cleaning test, a repair procedure or a claim about restored optical performance. Primary manufacturer instructions were checked on 29 October 2026. The packing and shopping checklist is editorial advice.

Identify the lenses before choosing a cleaner

Find the frame model, the lens description and the care leaflet supplied with the eyewear. If the lenses have been replaced, establish which lens maker’s instructions apply. For prescription lenses, ask the lens provider about the specific coating and care requirements.

Use the manufacturer’s current support page for the correct product type. A page may contain separate sections for sunglasses, goggles and other equipment. Read the relevant section rather than borrowing a cleaning recipe from a nearby heading.

If you cannot identify the lens or reconcile the instructions, send the manufacturer or supplying retailer the product details and ask which method, cloth and cleaner are approved. Save the answer with your purchase records.

Two manufacturer examples show why the details matter

The Oakley Product Care page identifies its Microclear bag for eyewear cleaning and storage. In the separate Iridium lens subsection, it recommends an Oakley Micro Bag or Oakley Lens Cleaning Kit and warns against other solvents, chemicals and third-party kits. Its goggle instructions appear elsewhere on the same page; they are a different product section.

Maui Jim’s sunglasses-care guidance describes a lukewarm rinse, mild liquid dish or bath soap without additives such as moisturizers, and drying with a clean, soft, absorbent cloth. It excludes paper products, abrasive cleaners and lens cleaners containing alcohol.

These examples belong to their stated manufacturers and product scopes. Check your own instructions before applying either method. A generic bottle marked “lens cleaner” is not enough information to establish approval for an unfamiliar coating.

Prepare a clean place and the approved supplies

Before starting, set aside the approved cloth or bag, any approved cleaning product and a place where you can handle the glasses without balancing them on golf equipment. Read the cleaner’s directions as well as the eyewear instructions.

Check the cloth itself. If it has loose debris or has been used on clubs, balls or shoes, set it aside for the appropriate cleaning or replacement. Our suggested golf-bag routine is to keep the eyewear cloth separate from the club-cleaning towel and to store it where it stays clean.

When the approved method needs a rinse and the necessary clean water is unavailable on the course, plan to complete that method at a suitable location. Carrying the right supplies is more useful than relying on an improvised wipe.

Follow the complete method, including drying

Follow the sequence specified for your eyewear, including any preparation, application, rinsing and drying directions. Avoid mixing parts of different manufacturers’ methods into a new recipe.

For the Maui Jim example above, the practical sequence is to rinse, wash using its specified mild soap, then rinse away the soap and dry using its specified cloth. Treat this as a Maui Jim example, not a universal instruction for every pair of golf sunglasses.

For a branded cleaning kit, confirm that the eyewear maker approves that exact product for your lenses, then follow its application directions. Do not assume a similarly named spray, wipe or treatment has the same approval.

Check the result in ordinary use after cleaning. If a mark remains, establish whether it is removable residue or a condition needing the retailer’s assessment before trying another product. This guide provides no scratch-polishing, coating-removal or damage-restoration method.

Care for the cloth and storage case too

Oakley calls for regular handwashing and air drying of its Microclear bag. Maui Jim advises washing its cleaning cloth in warm soapy water without fabric softener. Use the instructions for your own cloth or bag rather than applying one laundry method to every accessory.

Keep a clean spare if that fits your routine. Separate a used cloth from the clean one while travelling, and follow the relevant drying instructions before returning it to use.

Maui Jim recommends its protective case when the sunglasses are not being worn. For your own eyewear, choose storage that fits the frame and follows its instructions. Check that a replacement case accommodates the folded glasses without forcing the closure. A case and a cleaning cloth serve different roles; include the items your eyewear needs.

Choose a cleaning kit by approval, not bundle size

Item to check Question before buying
Cleaner, wipe or treatment Does the eyewear or lens maker approve this exact product for these lenses and coatings?
Cloth or cleaning bag Is this the type specified, and can you follow its washing and drying directions?
Replacement case Does it fit the folded frame and suit the maker’s storage instructions?
Travel kit Can you carry it conveniently and complete the approved method where you play?
Seller and contents What exact products and quantities are included, and what local delivery and return terms apply?

Start with what was supplied with the sunglasses and replace only what is missing, unsuitable or due for replacement. Confirm compatibility before comparing local delivered costs. This article recommends no universal cleaning chemical, claims no cleaning-test winner and gives no current prices or ratings.

If you are choosing a different pair rather than care supplies, our golf sunglasses buying guide covers the separate questions of fit, UV labels and lens options.

Common questions

Can I use the same cleaning kit for every pair?

Confirm approval for each lens and coating. A kit suitable for one pair does not establish approval for another.

Is my golf towel a suitable lens cloth?

Use the cloth or bag specified for the eyewear. Keep that item separate from your club-cleaning towel so the care supplies are ready when needed.

Should I keep cleaning a mark that will not disappear?

Ask the manufacturer or supplying retailer to assess the issue before changing products or attempting a repair. Cleaning and repairing are different decisions.
